Credit Courses

NOVA offers more than 1,000 courses for which students receive grades. Most of the courses can be applied to at least one degree or certificate program, while others are designed to prepare students for college-level work. Course credits are measured in semester hours at NOVA.

  • Developmental Courses
  • English as a Second Language Courses
  • College-Level Courses
Non-Credit Courses

In addition to college credit courses, NOVA offers many Community Education courses that include short courses, workshops and training to meet the needs of the local community. These courses are not for college credit, but in many cases Continuing Education Units (CEU) are awarded.

Achieving the Dream

Student success means more than a personal goal secured -- it means improved skills, better employability and economic growth for families, communities and our nation as a whole.

Achieving the Dream focuses on student groups who face the most significant barriers to success. ATD is committed to using student success data to help make decisions. For more information about the initiative, visit the national Achieving the Dream website.

Flexible Learning

NOVA provides options to make your education fit your busy schedule.

NOVA’s Extended Learning Institute (ELI) offers online and virtual hybrid courses, which are similar to traditional classroom instruction.

Hybrid courses combine online learning with traditional classroom instruction. Only about 50 percent of the classroom time is traditional; hybrid courses allow students the flexibility of completing coursework at their own pace throughout the week. Please visit the Hybrid Class Tips page for suggestions on successfully completing a hybrid course.

NOVA’s Weekend College gives you the opportunity to work toward a degree or seek professional enrichment and growth in a time frame that’s conducive to your professional and personal life. Our intensive classroom experience combined with independent study provides an in-depth and meaningful educational experience.

Credit for Prior Learning is way for NOVA students to earn college-level credits for work experience. A student’s experiential learning can be evaluated and potentially applied toward a degree/certificate through a process called Prior Learning Assessment (PLA).
